Individuals Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Medications Regain Weight Four Times Faster Compared to Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study indicates that individuals who come off blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional lifestyle plans.

Findings released in a leading health publication demonstrates that while obese people can lose a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"People buying such medications must be cognizant of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery implies a reversion to starting weight in about a year and a half.

Analyzing Therapies

The research, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

The team point out that people who lose weight through dieting typically have a less rapid weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Understanding the Quick Regain

Nutrition scientists suggest the mode of action of the drugs explains the heightened rebound.

These medications imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations far above than normal may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also diminish responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating far more likely."

An Ongoing Disease?

Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Professionals say that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment is often life-long.

This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "emphasize the long-term character of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.

Patient Testimonies

People who have come off the medication describe a intense resurgence of cravings.

"I experienced a switch flipping and you're instantly extremely hungry," described one woman.

This challenge is exacerbated if patients have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Widespread Interest

Survey data show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.

  • Adoption is greater among women than males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, researchers emphasize that while the jabs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent fix and lasting health benefits hinges on integrated lifestyle support.
