Wimbledon Adopts Video Replay System This Season.

The Championships tennis court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in implementing replay technology.

Replay technology will make its debut at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Competitors are granted the option to contest particular rulings made by the chair umpire, mirroring the system currently in operation at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

The new system will be operational on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This move arrives only a season following the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which brought an end to the centuries-old tradition of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the umpire to re-examine other situations, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot touched an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the number of challenges a player can initiate.

A Recent Example

A recent example occurred in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a tough call for the official, but thought his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and determined Draper was guilty of hindrance, granting the point to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. It has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews implemented at all of its tournaments.

Further Updates

A further change at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of graphical cues on displays to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where spectators have occasionally been uncertain if a ball was in or out.

Finally, with exactly 100 days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
